Hosting and infrastructure covers VPS and cloud providers, managed hosting, databases, object storage, CDNs, email delivery and other services that run someone else’s product. Customers range from a hobbyist with one server to companies with large monthly bills. Pricing is often usage-based, or a base plan plus metered overages.
Churn here has higher stakes on both sides. A failed payment can mean suspending a customer’s production service. A fraudulent signup can mean resources used and never paid for, followed by a chargeback.
Where hosting loses customers
Involuntary churn
- Bills that change every month. Usage-based invoices can be larger than the customer’s card limit or their bank’s usual pattern, and get declined.
- Cards that expire on long-running accounts. A server set up years ago keeps running long after the card on file was replaced.
- The person who signed up has left. Billing emails go to a former employee or a personal address of a freelancer who built the site.
Voluntary churn
- Migration to a bigger cloud as the customer grows, or to a cheaper host when they shrink.
- Project ends. A client site is taken down, a side project is abandoned, a test environment is no longer needed.
- Price changes and bill shock. An unexpected overage triggers a review of the whole account.
- Reliability incidents. An outage sends customers shopping.
Fraud and abuse
- Stolen cards used to run resources for spam, mining or attacks.
- Card testing against signup and billing forms.
- Chargebacks after the resources have been consumed.
How NoChurn handles it
Failed payments
On Stripe, NoChurn retries failed payments at times based on the decline reason and likely paydays, which matters when a decline is due to a temporary limit on a large usage invoice. Recovery emails are written by AI for each customer and you can review them before they go out. They should say plainly what happens and when (for example, the date your own policy suspends services), so the customer can act before anything goes down. Each email links to a hosted card update page; card data stays with your payment provider.
NoChurn does not suspend or delete anything: your platform keeps that decision. See failed payments, Stripe decline codes and card account updater and network tokens.
If you bill usage through Stripe billing meters (Stripe docs, accessed November 2026), NoChurn reads the resulting invoices like any other Stripe invoice.
Chargebacks and early fraud warnings
On Stripe and Braintree, NoChurn gathers dispute evidence automatically: cancel flow answers, emails sent, usage you send (instances run, bandwidth, requests served) and support conversations. It drafts a reply with AI, and nothing goes to the processor until a person on your team reviews it.
On Stripe, early fraud warnings appear with a one-click refund. For a hosting provider, refunding a charge flagged as fraud, and shutting down the resources on your side, is often better than waiting for the dispute. Visa and Mastercard run dispute and fraud monitoring programs with fines for merchants above their thresholds, and Stripe notes that Visa’s program counts early fraud warnings (Stripe docs, accessed November 2026). See Stripe early fraud warnings and winning chargebacks on Stripe.
Churn score at signup
Each new customer gets a score from 0 to 100 at signup and again on every change, based on payment method, signup source and any custom data you send. Disposable, virtual and prepaid cards score higher than cards from established banks or wallets. A card removed before renewal raises the score too. The score is a signal for your own checks (a lower starting limit, manual review, a deposit), not a fraud verdict on its own. See churn score and prepaid and virtual cards.
Cancel flow
| Reason | Suitable offer |
|---|---|
| Project ended | No offer, or a cheaper plan to keep backups |
| Bill too high | A smaller plan, or a call to review usage |
| Moving to another provider | Ask why; a call for larger accounts |
| Reliability | A note from your team on what changed |
| Not using it right now | Pause, if your platform supports it |
A one-click “cancel now” button stays visible on every step. Use the hosted modal in your control panel, or build the screens with the headless API. Your platform decides what happens to data and resources after cancellation; tell customers clearly in the flow. See cancel flows.
Win-back
Customers who leave get win-back emails at 30, 60 and 90 days, written from their cancel reason. A customer who left after an outage hears what you changed; one whose project ended may have a new one.

Integrations that fit
- Stripe for most usage-based and prepaid billing, with chargebacks and early fraud warnings.
- Braintree for PayPal and cards, with dispute evidence.
- Chargebee, Recurly, Maxio or Zuora for complex plans and invoicing.
- Any billing, by API if your billing engine is your own, which is common in hosting.
- Help desks such as Zendesk, Help Scout or Intercom, read only.
What to watch out for
- Suspension and deletion. Set your own timelines for suspending services and deleting data, publish them, and make recovery emails match them.
- Abuse handling is yours. NoChurn flags risk and handles payments; blocking accounts and investigating abuse stay with your team.
- Cancellation rules. Consumers and small businesses may be covered by online cancellation rules in some countries; see click to cancel rules and check with your counsel.
How NoChurn helps
For hosting and infrastructure, NoChurn recovers failed payments before services go down, prepares dispute evidence for your review, surfaces early fraud warnings with a one-click refund, scores risky signups, and wins back customers with a message that fits why they left. Every feature is on every plan, priced only by MRR and never by a share of recovered revenue. See pricing, or the pages for developer tools and AI and usage-based tools.
