AI products and usage-based tools have a churn pattern of their own. Customers try many tools, compare them often, and stop using one long before they cancel it. At the same time, each active customer has a real cost behind it (model calls, compute, storage), so a blanket discount can cost more than it saves. NoChurn helps you see the drop early and make offers that fit the economics.
Where AI and usage-based tools lose customers
Involuntary churn
- Variable invoices. When a bill depends on usage, a higher-than-usual charge is more likely to hit a card limit.
- Trial-era cards. Customers often sign up with a virtual or prepaid card to test the tool, and that card fails at the first real charge.
- Card updates nobody prioritizes. The tool is one of many on the card, and the failed payment email gets lost.
Voluntary churn
- Usage decay. The customer tried it for a project, the project ended, and the subscription keeps running unused.
- Switching. New tools appear fast, and a customer can move with little effort.
- Cost surprises. A large usage bill can push someone to cancel rather than adjust.
- Wrong plan size. A customer on a plan bigger than their real use feels they are overpaying.
How NoChurn handles it
Failed payments
NoChurn retries failed payments at times based on the customer’s local time and likely paydays, or you can keep Stripe Smart Retries. AI-written recovery emails go out by default on day 0, 3, 7 and 14, reviewed before sending, and link to a hosted card update page where card data stays with Stripe. Replies such as “why was this bill so high?” are read and sorted, then answered or sent to your team. See failed payments.
Churn score and early alerts
At signup each customer gets a score from 0 to 100 based on payment method, signup source and custom data. Disposable virtual and prepaid cards start as high risk; the levels are then learned from your own history. When a customer removes their card before renewal, NoChurn flags it and starts a save flow before the payment fails, not after. Combined with usage data, this lets you act before the renewal instead of reacting to a cancel. See churn score.
Offers by segment
Because each customer has a cost, the right offer depends on who is leaving. With the cancel flow you can target offers using any attribute you send:
| Segment | Offer that often fits |
|---|---|
| Low usage, on a large plan | Downgrade to a smaller plan |
| Project ended, may come back | Pause the subscription |
| Price-sensitive, still active | A one-off credit or discount through a Stripe coupon |
| Heavy user with a problem | Book a call |
A one-click “cancel now” button stays visible on every step. Use the hosted modal or the headless API for a flow drawn entirely in your own interface. See cancel flows.
Win-back
Customers who leave get win-back emails at 30, 60 and 90 days, written from the reason they gave. Someone who left because a feature was missing can hear what has changed since; someone who left over price can hear about a smaller plan.
Custom data worth sending
Usage is the most useful signal for this kind of product:
key_feature_usage: generations, queries, runs, tokens or credits used in a period.last_active_at: how long does usage go quiet before a cancel?activated_at: did the customer reach their first useful result?planandbilling_intervalsignup_source: do some channels bring short-lived “try it once” customers?trial_daysandcoupon_usedseats, if you sell team plans
You can send attributes and usage events through the API, in batches, by CSV or with the SDK. NoChurn computes which attributes go with churn (relative risk, sample size, confidence), and AI explains the results and suggests actions. Treat it as correlation, not cause. See custom data and predicting churn with customer data.
Setup
Connect Stripe in one click with Stripe Connect. If you bill elsewhere, keep your billing and send subscriptions, payments and cancellations through the REST API. Send usage events from your backend as they happen. See the quickstart.
How NoChurn helps
For AI and usage-based tools, NoChurn turns usage into an early warning, lets you pick offers by segment so a save does not cost more than it brings, and recovers failed payments on variable invoices. Every feature is on every plan, and the price depends only on MRR. See pricing, or the pages for developer tools and B2B SaaS.
