Fintech products increasingly sell subscriptions on top of the core service: a premium tier on a current account, a paid plan in a budgeting or investing app, a subscription for accounting, invoicing or expense software. The subscription side behaves like any other, but the setting is more sensitive. Customers read payment emails carefully, they expect cancellations to be clean, and a message that looks like phishing can damage trust in the whole product.
NoChurn handles the subscription side. It is not a compliance tool, and this page makes no claim that using NoChurn meets any regulatory requirement in your market. Your own compliance team decides what you may send, store and offer.
How fintech customers pay
- From a balance you hold. Many apps charge the subscription fee from the customer’s account or wallet inside the product. Billing then lives in your own ledger, and you send subscriptions, payments and cancellations to NoChurn through the REST API.
- By card, through Stripe or Braintree, common for finance software sold on the web. See Stripe and Braintree.
- Through the App Store or Google Play, for mobile-first apps. Apple and Google run billing, retries and cancellation; NoChurn reads those events. See App Store and Google Play.
- By direct debit for some European business tools, through GoCardless or Mollie.
Why fintech subscribers churn
Involuntary churn
- Not enough balance when the fee is due. When the fee comes from a balance you hold, a failed charge usually means the account is low, not that a card is broken. Retrying at the wrong time just fails again.
- Cards replaced after fraud alerts. Finance-minded customers react quickly to suspicious activity and often get new cards.
- Store billing issues on iOS and Android, handled by Apple and Google. See App Store billing retry and Google Play grace period.
Voluntary churn
- The premium perk was a one-time need. Travel insurance before a trip, higher limits for one large transfer, a tax-season feature.
- The customer moved their main account elsewhere. The subscription goes when the salary stops landing in your app.
- Price sensitivity. People who use a budgeting app are, by definition, watching their spending.
- Low engagement. The app gets linked, then forgotten.
How NoChurn handles it
Failed payments
On Stripe, NoChurn retries failed card payments at times based on the decline reason and likely paydays, which suits customers who are short of funds until payday. On other billing tools the provider’s own retries stay in place. If you bill from an internal balance, you decide when to retry and send the result to NoChurn; NoChurn then runs the emails.
Recovery emails are written by AI and can be reviewed before they go out. In fintech, that review step is worth using: you can keep the wording close to your existing communications, avoid anything that looks like a request for credentials, and make sure each email points only to your own domain or NoChurn’s hosted card update page. Card data stays with your payment provider; NoChurn never sees card numbers. See failed payments.
Cancel flow
The flow asks for a reason and shows a matching offer:
| Reason | Offer that fits |
|---|---|
| I only needed it for one thing | Pause until the next time they need it |
| Too expensive | Move to a lower tier, or a discount |
| I moved my main account | Ask what would bring it back, then let them go |
| Something went wrong | Pass it to support |
A one-click “cancel now” button is visible on every step, and a cancel that is asked for is carried out. For an app where the customer already trusts you with money, that matters more than any offer. Most fintech teams draw the flow natively with the headless API, in the app’s own design; a hosted modal with your colors and logo also exists for web products. For subscriptions bought through Apple or Google, your app can show the NoChurn flow first, and the store’s own cancel button always works. See cancel flows and click-to-cancel rules.
Churn score
Each customer gets a score from 0 to 100 at signup and on every change, from payment method, signup source and the custom data you send. When a customer removes their card before a renewal, the score goes up so you can act before the charge fails. See churn score.
Chargebacks
On Stripe and Braintree, NoChurn gathers evidence for each dispute automatically (cancel flow answers, emails sent, usage, support conversations) and drafts a reply with AI. Nothing is sent until a person has reviewed it. On Stripe, early fraud warnings appear with a one-click refund. Disputes on other providers are shown read only. See chargebacks and winning Stripe chargebacks.
Win-back
Customers who cancel get win-back emails at 30, 60 and 90 days, written from their cancel reason: someone who paused for a trip hears about the next one, someone who left over price hears about a cheaper tier.
Custom data worth sending
You hold a lot of financial data. NoChurn does not need it, and you should not send it: no balances, no transactions, no account numbers. Product behaviour is enough:
last_active_at: last app open or login.key_feature_usage: how often the premium feature is used (count, not amounts).is_primary_account: a yes/no flag you compute yourself, if salary deposits land in your product.signup_sourceandreferralplanandbilling_intervalcountry
NoChurn shows which attributes go with churn, with sample sizes. Correlation, not causation. See custom data.
Integrations that fit
- Any billing by API when fees come from an in-app balance.
- Stripe or Braintree for card billing on the web.
- App Store and Google Play for in-app subscriptions.
- Intercom or Zendesk for support conversations, read only.
What to watch out for
- Run every template past compliance. AI drafts are reviewable for a reason; use that step.
- Keep data minimal. Send behaviour and flags, never financial records.
- Store subscribers. Retries and the cancel button stay with Apple and Google.
- When NoChurn is not the right tool. If your revenue comes from transaction fees or interest rather than subscriptions, churn is an engagement problem, and a product analytics tool will serve you better.
Pricing
Every feature is on every plan, and the price depends only on your MRR: free up to $300, then from $9 a month in small steps up to $399 at $500k, custom above. NoChurn never takes a share of recovered revenue. See pricing, or the pages for consumer subscriptions and mobile apps.
