NoChurn for developer tools and API products

Developers churn when usage stops, and they want everything through an API.

  • Everything through the API and webhooks
  • First deploy as the activation signal
  • A cancel flow your team can build in code

WHEN A PAYMENT FAILS

A retry at the right moment, then an email that sounds like you.

Retries timed to the customer’s local time and likely paydays, an email written for this customer and checked before it leaves, and a card update page that takes ten seconds.

Failed payments

Developer tools and API products are bought by people who expect to integrate things themselves. They sign up fast, try the API, and either build on it or move on. Many accounts start as one developer on a personal card and grow into a team on a company card. NoChurn fits this: everything is available through a REST API, signed webhooks and an MCP server, and the churn signals come from the usage data you already have.

Where developer tools lose customers

Involuntary churn

  • Personal cards on side projects. A developer pays with a personal card, then the card expires or is replaced.
  • Company cards that change owners. The engineer who added the card leaves, and failed payment emails go to an inbox nobody reads.
  • Usage-based invoices. A traffic spike produces a larger charge that the card declines.

Voluntary churn

  • The integration never shipped. The developer signed up, made a few test calls, and the project stalled.
  • The project ended. A hackathon, a prototype, a client job: usage stops with it.
  • Switching or building in-house. Developers can replace a tool quickly once they decide to.
  • Plan too large. A team pays for capacity it does not use.

How NoChurn handles it

Failed payments

NoChurn retries failed payments based on the customer’s local time and likely paydays, or you can keep Stripe Smart Retries. AI-written recovery emails go out by default on day 0, 3, 7 and 14, reviewed before sending, and link to a hosted card update page where card data stays with Stripe. Replies are read and sorted, then answered or sent to your team. See failed payments.

Churn score

New accounts get a score from 0 to 100 at signup, based on payment method, signup source and custom data. Disposable virtual cards, common for trying tools, start as high risk; levels are then learned from your own history. When a customer removes their card before renewal, NoChurn flags it and starts a save flow before the payment fails. See churn score.

Headless cancel flow

Developers often dislike modals. With the headless API you fetch the cancel reasons and offers for a customer and post back the answer, then render it in your own dashboard or desktop app. Offers that tend to suit developer tools:

  • Project ended: pause the subscription.
  • Paying for more than I use: downgrade to a smaller plan.
  • Too expensive: discount through a Stripe coupon.
  • Integration problems: book a call with an engineer.

A one-click “cancel now” option stays on every step. If you prefer, the hosted modal works too, with custom CSS. See cancel flows.

Win-back

Customers who cancel get win-back emails at 30, 60 and 90 days, written from their reason. A developer whose project ended can hear from you when they may be starting the next one.

Custom data worth sending

Usage is the strongest signal for API products:

  • activated_at: first successful API call or first deploy. Do accounts that never reach it cancel first?
  • key_feature_usage: API calls, builds, deploys, events, active projects.
  • last_active_at: last API call or dashboard login.
  • seats: how many developers on the account.
  • signup_source: docs, search, a community post, a marketplace.
  • plan and billing_interval
  • support_tickets: do accounts that open tickets stay or leave?

Send them through the API, in batches, by CSV or with the SDK. NoChurn computes which attributes go with churn (relative risk, sample size, confidence), and AI explains the result. Correlation, not cause. See custom data.

Setup

Connect Stripe in one click with Stripe Connect, or keep your own billing and send subscriptions, payments and cancellations through the REST API. Signed webhooks keep your own systems in sync with what happens in NoChurn. You can also connect the NoChurn MCP server to a coding agent such as Claude Code or Cursor and let it add the cancel flow, webhooks and custom data to your app. See the API reference.

How NoChurn helps

For developer tools and API products, NoChurn offers an API-first way to recover failed payments, run a cancel flow in your own UI, and learn which usage patterns go with churn. Every feature is on every plan, and the price depends only on MRR. See pricing, or the pages for AI and usage-based tools and B2B SaaS.
