NOCHURN VS RECURLY ENGAGE

Recurly Engage alternative: NoChurn vs Recurly Engage

Recurly Engage is a low-code prompt platform for cancel saves, upsells and payment failure messages, sold on annual terms. NoChurn is a self-serve retention tool for Stripe or any billing by API, priced by MRR.

Checked November 2026 From public information 8 sources

Recurly Engage is Recurly’s retention and lifecycle product. It shows targeted prompts on your website and in your apps (cancel saves, payment failure reminders, upsells, resubscribe offers) and can act on the billing record in one click. NoChurn covers the retention side of that list for subscription businesses on Stripe, or on any billing system through a REST API, with a flat price based on your MRR.

The two products are built for different buyers. Engage is a marketing and lifecycle platform sold on annual terms, with many connectors and A/B testing. NoChurn is a self-serve tool focused on four jobs: failed payments, cancel flows, win-back and churn scoring, plus chargebacks. This page compares them as of November 2026, from Recurly’s public pricing page and Engage documentation.

Where Recurly Engage is a better fit

  • You want one platform for the whole subscriber journey. Engage covers onboarding, feature adoption, upsell and cross-sell prompts as well as retention. NoChurn does not do onboarding guides or upsell campaigns.
  • You run many experiments. A/B testing of prompts against your own goals is built into Engage. NoChurn has no built-in A/B testing.
  • You have a marketing team and a large audience. Engage connects to tools such as Braze, Iterable, Salesforce Marketing Cloud, Segment, Amplitude and Mixpanel, and its prompts are built in a low-code console. That suits a lifecycle team running campaigns at volume.
  • You ship on TV and streaming devices. Engage lists SDKs for Roku and CTV browsers, and in-app purchase flows on Roku, Apple and Google devices. NoChurn has no TV SDK.
  • You are already on Recurly and will negotiate an annual bundle. Recurly’s pricing page says the more of its products you use, the better the deal, and Engage is available in Hosted Account Management and Recurly Checkout without extra tagging.

Where NoChurn is different

Price follows your size, from zero. NoChurn is free until $300 MRR, then from $9/month, in small steps up to $399/month at $500k MRR, with a quote above that. No annual commitment, no prompt volume to forecast. See pricing.

Self-serve, in minutes. Connect Stripe in one click, or send subscriptions, payments and cancellations from your own billing through the API. A test mode lets you try everything without touching real customers.

Every feature on every plan. Failed payment recovery, cancel flows, win-back, churn score, custom data, chargebacks and the API are all on the free plan too.

Recovery emails, not only prompts. A prompt only reaches a customer who comes back to your product. NoChurn also writes recovery emails with AI for each failed payment, in the customer’s language, and you review them before they go out. Logged-in customers can see an in-app wall or banner with a link to pay. See failed payments.

Click-to-cancel built in. A one-click “cancel now” stays visible on every step of the NoChurn flow. Offers are shown, never forced. See cancel flows.

Headless when you want your own UI. Use the hosted modal (themes, fonts, colors, logo, custom CSS) or fetch reasons and offers from the API and render them in your web, desktop, iOS or Android app. An MCP server lets a coding agent wire it in. See headless API.

Chargebacks included. When a dispute opens on Stripe or Braintree, NoChurn gathers the evidence it already has and drafts a reply for a person on your team to review. See chargebacks.

NoChurn is new and has no customer results to show. Recurly has run subscription billing for years and Engage is a mature lifecycle product. Weigh that honestly.

Using both, or switching

If you bill with Recurly, you do not have to choose between Recurly’s tools and NoChurn. Recurly keeps retries, dunning and invoicing; NoChurn connects with a Recurly API key and adds recovery emails, the cancel flow, win-back and the churn score. See NoChurn + Recurly and our guide to dunning in Recurly.

If you use Engage today and want to move retention to NoChurn:

  1. Connect your billing in test mode first: Stripe in one click, Recurly or another provider with an API key, or the REST API. Follow the quickstart.
  2. List your cancel save prompts. Write down each reason and the offer tied to it, then recreate them in NoChurn as a coupon, a pause, a plan change or a call.
  3. Pick one owner for payment failure messages. If NoChurn sends recovery emails, turn off overlapping Engage payment failure prompts, or keep them for in-app reminders only, so nobody gets two sequences.
  4. Keep what NoChurn does not do. Onboarding, upsell and push campaigns can stay in Engage.
  5. Compare the same weeks (save rate, recovered payments, complaints) before you decide, and check your Engage renewal date, since it is billed annually.

FAQ

Not as a built-in feature. You can compare save rates and recovered payments over the same period, but there is no split-testing engine.

How NoChurn helps

NoChurn recovers failed payments with smart retries and reviewed, AI-written emails, keeps cancelling customers with an honest, reason-based flow where “cancel now” is always one click away, and wins back churned ones at 30, 60 and 90 days. It works with Stripe in one click or with any billing through the API, for one flat price by MRR. Start with the cancel flow, failed payments or pricing.
