NOCHURN VS STRIPE SMART DISPUTES
Stripe Smart Disputes vs NoChurn: who answers your chargebacks?
Stripe Smart Disputes builds and auto-submits evidence from data Stripe holds, with a fee only on won disputes. NoChurn drafts replies from subscription evidence Stripe does not see, for a person to review, at a flat price by MRR.
- PRICEBy MRR, flatFree until $300 MRR, then from $9 a month.
- PLANSEvery feature on every planNo feature tiers, the free plan included.
- FEESNever a cutNo percentage of the revenue we recover.
If you take payments on Stripe, you already have a dispute assistant: Smart Disputes builds an evidence packet for eligible disputes and submits it before the deadline if you do nothing. Stripe also offers dispute prevention through Verifi and Ethoca. NoChurn is not a replacement for either. It is a retention tool for subscription businesses that, when a dispute opens, gathers the subscription evidence Stripe does not have and drafts a reply for a person on your team to review.
This page compares them from Stripe’s documentation as of November 2026. Stripe ships often, so check the linked docs for the current behavior and Stripe’s pricing page for fees in your country.

What Stripe already does well
No integration. Stripe says Smart Disputes requires no extra work if you already use Stripe. Once your account is enrolled, Stripe builds packets for eligible disputes and notifies you by email and in the Dashboard.
It never misses a deadline. If you take no action, Smart Disputes submits the pre-filled packet just before the dispute times out. On Stripe, you usually have 7 to 21 days to respond after a chargeback is created, depending on the card network, so a safety net matters.
You pay only when you win. Stripe’s docs say it bills the Smart Disputes fee only on won disputes. Check the amount on Stripe’s pricing page.
You can add to the packet. The Dispute object lists smart_disputes.recommended_evidence and a smart_disputes.status (available, requires_evidence or unavailable). Setting intended_submission_method to prefer_smart_disputes merges your own evidence with Stripe’s generated packet.
Prevention before the chargeback. Stripe’s dispute prevention connects to Verifi and Ethoca. Deflection sends transaction data so the cardholder recognizes the charge; resolution rules in Radar refund chosen disputes automatically, and Stripe says those resolved disputes do not count toward your dispute rate.
Where Stripe alone is enough. If disputes are rare, mostly fraud claims on one-off payments, and your Stripe data (receipts, billing address, terms acceptance) tells the whole story, Smart Disputes may be all you need.
Where NoChurn adds to Stripe
Evidence from the subscription, not only the payment. Many subscription disputes are “subscription canceled” or “unrecognized” claims. Winning them depends on things Stripe does not see: whether the customer ever tried to cancel, which reminders and emails they got before the renewal, whether they kept using the product after the charge, and what they said to support. NoChurn already holds most of that, because it runs your cancel flow and recovery emails and reads your help desk.
A person approves every reply. NoChurn drafts the response with AI, only from items in the evidence file, and nothing goes to Stripe or Braintree until someone on your team has reviewed it. Customer messages are treated as data, never as instructions.
Fewer disputes in the first place. A one-click “cancel now” that is always visible, clear renewal reminders and fast recovery of failed payments remove common reasons customers call their bank. See cancel flows and failed payments.
Early fraud warnings with a decision. When Stripe receives an early fraud warning, NoChurn proposes a refund in one click and can stop the subscription so the next renewal does not cause a second dispute. Stripe’s own guidance is not to refund every warning; its docs suggest refunding mostly when the charge is about the size of your dispute fee or less.
Flat price, every feature. Free until $300 MRR, then from $9/month up to $399/month at $500k MRR, custom above. Chargebacks, recovery, cancel flows, win-back and churn score are on every plan. See pricing.
NoChurn is new and has no win-rate figures to share. Stripe has data from its whole network. Weigh that honestly.
Running both without answering twice
You can keep Smart Disputes on and still use NoChurn. The rule is simple: one submission per dispute, because submitting evidence is final.
- Connect Stripe with the quickstart, in test mode first.
- Decide who submits by default. Either let NoChurn’s reviewed reply go first and keep Smart Disputes as the deadline safety net, or turn off Smart Disputes auto-submit in your Stripe dispute settings.
- NoChurn checks before sending. If Stripe has already submitted a Smart Disputes packet, NoChurn does not submit and shows the dispute as answered by Stripe.
- Send more data at charge time anyway. Stripe recommends collecting email, name, billing address, terms acceptance and receipts; that helps both tools.
- Review outcomes monthly by reason, and fix the source: billing descriptor, renewal reminders, cancel button.
FAQ
Is Stripe Smart Disputes free?
There is no setup cost, and Stripe says it charges the Smart Disputes fee only when you win. The standard dispute fees still apply when a dispute is opened. Fees vary by country; see Stripe’s pricing page.
Does Smart Disputes work for every dispute?
No. Stripe decides eligibility from the reason code, payment method, evidence available, its relevance and cost. A dispute can be requires_evidence until you add the recommended fields, or unavailable.
Does NoChurn offer Verifi or Ethoca alerts?
No. NoChurn reads Stripe early fraud warnings and offers a one-click refund, but it is not connected to any alert network. Stripe’s dispute prevention is the place for that.
Will NoChurn submit evidence automatically?
Every drafted reply waits for a person on your team by default. NoChurn never submits a dispute Stripe has already answered.
How NoChurn helps
NoChurn keeps subscription customers from leaving, or disputing, for the wrong reasons: it recovers failed payments, runs an honest cancel flow, wins back churned customers and, when a dispute opens on Stripe or Braintree, drafts a reply from evidence Stripe does not have, for you to review. One flat price by MRR, every feature included. Read how to win chargebacks on Stripe, see chargebacks or pricing.
