Subscription boxes and ecommerce subscriptions (coffee, pet food, skincare, meal kits, razors, vitamins) sell a physical product on a schedule. Churn here is shaped by things a software subscription never has to deal with: a shipping cutoff, a pantry that is still full, a product the customer did not like, a parcel that went missing. NoChurn helps with the recurring billing side: renewals that fail, customers who want a break rather than an exit, and disputes over charges.
Check the fit first
NoChurn works with subscriptions billed through Stripe, the other billing and payment providers it connects to, or your own system through the REST API. Many stores run subscriptions through an app inside their ecommerce platform. NoChurn has no direct connector for those apps; if the app can send you webhooks or you can export its events, you can forward subscriptions, payments and cancellations to NoChurn by API. If you cannot get those events out, NoChurn is not the right tool for your store yet.
How subscribers pay
- A card saved at the first order, charged on every renewal (weekly, monthly or every few weeks).
- Wallets at checkout, saved for future charges where the provider supports it.
- Prepaid plans: three, six or twelve boxes paid upfront, often given as gifts.
- Direct debit for some European subscriptions, through GoCardless or Mollie.
Why subscribers churn
Involuntary churn
- The renewal fails right before the shipping cutoff. A retry that succeeds two days late can mean a box that misses its slot.
- Cards saved at the first order expire months later. See expiring cards.
- Prepaid and virtual cards used for an introductory offer. See prepaid and virtual cards.
Voluntary churn
- Too much product. The cupboard is full; the customer wants to skip, not quit.
- Did not like the last box. One bad box can end a subscription.
- Delivery problems. A late, damaged or missing parcel.
- The introductory discount ended. The first boxes were cheap; the full price feels different.
- Gift subscriptions end and nobody renews.
How NoChurn handles it
Failed payments
On Stripe, NoChurn retries failed renewals at times based on the decline reason and likely paydays, or you can keep Stripe Smart Retries. On other billing tools, the provider’s own dunning stays and NoChurn adds AI-written emails and a card update link next to it. You can review emails before they go out, and mention what matters to the customer: their next box and when it ships. The hosted card update page works on a phone and keeps card data with your payment provider. See failed payments.
Cancel flow: skip and pause first
Most “cancel” clicks in ecommerce subscriptions are really “not now”. The cancel flow asks why and offers the matching alternative:
| Reason | Offer that fits |
|---|---|
| I have too much product | Pause for one or two cycles (a skip) |
| I am travelling or moving | Pause until a date they choose |
| It is too expensive | Plan change to a smaller box or less frequent delivery, or a discount |
| I did not like the last box | Plan change to another variant, or pass it to support |
| Delivery problems | Pass it to support |
On Stripe, a pause can stop payment collection while the subscription stays in place (Stripe, accessed November 2026). A one-click “cancel now” button is visible on every step, and a cancel that is asked for is carried out. Use the hosted modal on your account page, or build the screens yourself with the headless API. See cancel flows, pause vs discount and Stripe pause.
Gorgias and support tickets
Ecommerce teams often run support in Gorgias, which connects to stores and shows order data next to each ticket (Gorgias, accessed November 2026). NoChurn reads Gorgias tickets (read only), matches them to customers by email, and uses them in the churn score, in churn drivers and in dispute evidence. A customer who opened two “where is my order” tickets this month is a customer at risk, and the score can show it. See Gorgias subscription cancellations and Gorgias refund requests. Zendesk, Help Scout and Crisp work the same way.
Chargebacks
Physical products bring disputes that software rarely sees: “item not received”, “not as described”, or “I cancelled and was still charged”. On Stripe and Braintree, NoChurn gathers evidence automatically: cancel flow answers (including when the customer chose to skip instead of cancel), emails sent, and support conversations from Gorgias or another help desk. AI drafts the reply, and it is sent only after a person on your team reviews it.
Shipping and tracking proof stays in your fulfilment tools; NoChurn does not collect it. Add it during the review step, before the response goes out, so the reply covers delivery as well as the subscription history. On Stripe, early fraud warnings also appear with a one-click refund, which is often cheaper than shipping a box to a stolen card. Disputes on other providers are shown read only. See chargebacks, Gorgias chargeback evidence and Stripe early fraud warnings.
Win-back
Customers who cancel get win-back emails at 30, 60 and 90 days, written from their cancel reason. “Too much product” can come back with a less frequent plan; “did not like the box” can hear about a new range. See win-back.
Custom data worth sending

The churn score (0 to 100 at signup and on every change) uses these with the payment method and signup source. NoChurn shows which attributes go with churn, with sample sizes. Correlation, not causation: customers who skip a lot may be your most loyal ones. See custom data.
What to watch out for
- The shipping cutoff. Line up your retry and email timing with it, and pause shipments while a payment is being recovered.
- Gifts are not churn. A prepaid gift that ends is a win-back opportunity, not a failure.
- One-off ecommerce is out of scope. NoChurn works on recurring charges. For single orders and abandoned carts, an ecommerce marketing tool is the better fit.
Pricing
Every feature is on every plan, and the price depends only on your MRR: free up to $300, then from $9 a month in small steps up to $399 at $500k, custom above. NoChurn never takes a share of recovered revenue. See pricing, or the page for consumer subscriptions.
