Paid memberships and communities sell belonging as much as content. Members join for a group, a creator, a club or a set of perks, and they often leave without complaint: they got busy, they stopped showing up, or money got tight for a month. NoChurn helps you keep the payment side from failing silently and gives members a better option than canceling when a break is all they need.
Where memberships lose members
Involuntary churn
- Small recurring charges on personal cards. They fail for ordinary reasons (low balance, expired card) and members may not notice for weeks.
- Cards used only for this membership, including prepaid and virtual cards that run out.
- Payment emails that look like spam. A plain billing notice from a community the member rarely opens is easy to miss.
Voluntary churn
- Fading participation. The member stops attending events or reading posts, and the next charge feels like a waste.
- A temporary break. Travel, a new job, a new baby: the member wants to step back, not leave for good.
- Tier mismatch. A member on the top tier only uses the basics.
- Leaving with the creator or host. If key people leave, members follow. That one needs a product answer, not a retention offer.
How NoChurn handles it
Failed payments
NoChurn retries failed payments at times based on the member’s local time and likely paydays, or you can keep Stripe Smart Retries. Recovery emails are written by AI for each member, in their language, sent by default on day 0, 3, 7 and 14, and reviewed before they go out, so the tone can match your community instead of sounding like a bank. Each email links to a hosted card update page; card data stays with Stripe. Replies are read and sorted, then answered or passed to you. See failed payments.
Churn score
New members get a score from 0 to 100 at signup, based on payment method, signup source and any custom data you send. Members who remove their card before renewal are flagged, and a save flow starts before the payment fails. See churn score.
Cancel flow with a pause option
Memberships are a natural fit for pausing. The cancel flow asks for a reason and shows a matching offer:
- Taking a break: pause the membership for a month or more (Stripe can pause payment collection).
- Not using the full tier: move to a lower tier.
- Too expensive right now: a discount through a Stripe coupon.
- Something went wrong: offer a call or a message from the host.
A one-click “cancel now” button is always visible. Members who want to go can go, which is better for trust in a community than a maze. The hosted modal takes your colors, fonts and logo, or you can build your own screens with the headless API. See cancel flows and pause vs discount offers.
Win-back
Former members receive win-back emails at 30, 60 and 90 days, written from their cancel reason. A member who left for a break can be invited back at the right time; one who left over price can hear about a cheaper tier.
Custom data worth sending
last_active_at: last post, comment, login or event attended.key_feature_usage: events attended, posts read, perks used.signup_source: referral from another member, social, a launch campaign.planandbilling_interval: tier, monthly or annual.coupon_used: do launch-discount members stay after the discount ends?signup_date: do some cohorts leave sooner?country
NoChurn computes which attributes go with churn and AI explains them. Correlation, not cause. See custom data.
Setup
If your membership is billed through your own Stripe account, connect it in one click with Stripe Connect. If you use another billing system, send subscriptions, payments and cancellations through the REST API. Add the cancel flow to your member account page with a script tag, or link to the hosted flow. If your membership platform controls the cancel page and you cannot change it, you can still use payment recovery and win-back. See the quickstart.
How NoChurn helps
For memberships and communities, NoChurn recovers failed payments with emails in your own voice, offers a pause or lower tier before a cancel, keeps a one-click exit on every step, and invites former members back at 30, 60 and 90 days. Every feature is on every plan, priced by MRR. See pricing, or the pages for newsletters and media and online courses.
