Online courses and edtech subscriptions sell progress. Learners join with a goal (a new skill, an exam, a language) and stay while they feel they are moving forward. When they stall, the subscription starts to look like a reminder of something they did not finish. Payment plans and monthly subscriptions also bring the usual card failures. NoChurn handles both.
Where online courses and edtech lose learners
Involuntary churn
- Payment plans and monthly fees on personal cards, which fail for low balance, expiry or bank declines.
- Students and young learners who use prepaid or virtual cards.
- Card updates nobody gets to. A learner in the middle of a busy term may ignore a billing email.
Voluntary churn
- Stalled progress. The learner falls behind, stops logging in, then cancels.
- Goal reached. They passed the exam or finished the course. That is a success, and the right move is a clean exit or a next step, not a discount.
- Busy periods. Exams, holidays and work deadlines push study aside for a while.
- Wrong level. The content feels too easy or too hard.
How NoChurn handles it
Failed payments
NoChurn retries failed payments based on the learner’s local time and likely paydays, or you can keep Stripe Smart Retries. Recovery emails are written by AI for each learner, in their language, sent by default on day 0, 3, 7 and 14 and reviewed before they go out. They link to a hosted card update page; card data stays with Stripe. Replies are read, sorted, and answered or sent to your team. See failed payments.
Churn score
New learners get a score from 0 to 100 at signup, based on payment method, signup source and custom data such as the course they chose. Prepaid and disposable virtual cards start as high risk, and the levels are then learned from your own history. If a learner removes their card before renewal, NoChurn flags it and starts a save flow before the payment fails. See churn score.
Cancel flow with study-friendly offers
The cancel flow asks for a reason and shows a matching offer:
| Reason | Suitable offer |
|---|---|
| No time right now | Pause the subscription until after exams or holidays |
| Too expensive | Discount through a Stripe coupon, or a lower plan |
| Content not right for me | Book a call to find the right level |
| I reached my goal | No offer, a clean exit |
A one-click “cancel now” button is always visible. The hosted modal takes your brand, or the headless API lets you build the flow inside your learning app on web, iOS or Android. See cancel flows and cancel flow best practices.
Win-back
Learners who cancel receive win-back emails at 30, 60 and 90 days, written from their reason. A learner who paused for exams or left because they had no time can be invited back when things are calmer.
Custom data worth sending
activated_at: first lesson completed. Do learners who never start cancel first?last_active_at: last lesson or practice session.key_feature_usage: lessons completed, quizzes taken, streak length.signup_source: ads, search, a partner school, a referral.planandbilling_intervaltrial_daysandcoupon_used- the course or track, as your own attribute name
NoChurn computes which attributes go with churn and AI explains what it finds. Correlation, not cause: a link between a stalled streak and canceling does not prove one causes the other. See custom data.
Setup
Connect Stripe in one click with Stripe Connect. Payment plans billed as Stripe subscriptions are handled like any other subscription. If you use another billing system, keep it and send subscriptions, payments and cancellations through the REST API. Send learning activity from your platform’s backend. See the quickstart.
How NoChurn helps
For online courses and edtech, NoChurn recovers failed payments, offers pauses around busy periods, keeps a one-click exit for learners who are done, and shows which learning habits go with churn. Every feature is on every plan; you pay by MRR band, never a share of recovered revenue. See pricing, or the pages for mobile apps and memberships and communities.
